The Crown’s Shadow

A candlelit study with maps and letters scattered across a desk, a quill lying next to an ancient crown.

In the year 1524, within the gilded halls of the Arvendel Empire, the corridors of power whispered with secrets. Leontius Marlowe, a young royal scribe, spent his days transcribing decrees and recording the motions of the court. He admired the order of the palace, the precision of the empire, but he also sensed a shadow lingering behind the gold and velvet.

One night, while cataloging letters in the royal archives, Leontius discovered a bundle tied with black ribbon. The letters revealed a conspiracy: a faction of nobles plotting to overthrow the emperor, replacing him with a figure who would serve their ambitions. Each page was detailed with names, dates, and strategies — the kind of information that could ignite a rebellion if it fell into the wrong hands.

Leontius faced a moral crossroad. To expose the plot was to risk his life, yet to remain silent meant he was complicit in treason. For days, he pondered his choice, wandering the moonlit gardens where the statues of past emperors seemed to watch him. He realized that the empire’s strength rested not in its armies alone, but in those willing to protect truth and justice.

With careful discretion, he began sending coded warnings to the emperor, hiding messages within seemingly mundane documents. The emperor, though cautious and wary, trusted Leontius’s counsel and began discreetly countering the conspirators. One by one, the plot unraveled without spilling blood or causing chaos in the streets. The conspirators were arrested in secret, and the court returned to its facade of calm.

In the aftermath, Leontius returned to his scribe’s desk, quietly continuing his work. Few knew the role he had played, and fewer still understood the danger he had faced. Yet he carried a profound understanding of duty, loyalty, and the courage required to act when no one was watching.
